I am sad to report some tragic news for those of us in central Indiana. Atlas Supermarket, the famed/historic/folkloric grocery store that has been the center of eppicurean culture in Indianapolis for more than 50 years (and my sole source of Jim's wares in the years I've been living here) is closing. It really came as a shock, as there was no indication of any trouble until the shocking revalation last night. It turns out the reason is a labor dispute with the Butchers' Union, this despite the fact that the butcher I talked to last night was both quite happy with his situation, claims that all of the others are, too, and that when they (the butchers) tried to contact "their" union and let them know that they were happy with their working conditions and saw no reason for a dispute (this is the union that is supposed to represent them, of course...), the union wouldn't even respond. I know much of the town was saddened by the departure of Rosselyn bakery. that didn't affect me so much, I actually like the restauraunt that went in there on BroadRipple Ave/Westfield Ave, and they did, after all, have health department concerns. But, the loss of Atlas has me quite depressed. It's like someone dropped an ice cube on my heart...
