Rob I can tell you, that it is done, in most recipes found here in the mediterranean it is common use, to drain the water, especially if you are going to deep fry them or you have a recipe that requires not much liquids. I have seen in german cookbooks that they always describe the salting, because germans are not very used to eggplants, or haven't been in the past.
