And I wired a $3.46 rheostat into the cord in order to lower the temperature. This $59 smoker took a lot of experimenting with to get things just right & I was fortunate to have input from others with similar outfits. It was an inexpensive outfit to play with and worked better than my Ducane gas grill & Weber charcoal kettle. Certainly isn't a commercial unit. My best results were when I smoked the halved pods in the smoker for 8-10 hours and finishing up in my dehydrator if I wanted them for powder and flakes. It actually doesn't take long at all to impart a smoky flavor. You are 'smoke DRYING' your chiles. Smokers are not set up to have the air exchanges necessary to do a good job. For the best results, you should occasionally remove the lid entirely to allow the excess moisture to escape. This allows you to dry in a fraction of the time and also to smoke at lower temperatures. -Jim C Mild to Wild
