Thanks Joe... There are apparently many remedies.

I just read another one recently though I can't remember where.

Take one of those LARGE cabbage leaves or in my case (didn't plant cabbage
yet) a large lemon sorrel leaf, and place it on the soil near the plants
being effected at night.  In the morning, after the sun has risen, check
under the leaf, because the slugs and the earwigs will congregate there to
get out of the heat.  Then scoop them up and get rid of them.  

throw the leaf in the compost bin.  :)
