We're back from San Diego. After four days and nights of intensive research, here are some places that may merit your attention: * Hot Licks Hot Sauces in Seaport Village (619-235-4000, a little west of the Hyatt). Good selection of hot sauces, including the soon-to-be-infamous "Y2K Millenium Meltdown" sauce. A bottle every on-line chile-head must own. The contents will undoubtedly disappoint, but the marketroids score big on this one. Hot Licks is sponsoring a Fiery Foods Festival September 25-26. Call for more info. * El Agave (about 1/2 mile south of Old Town above the Old Town Market and Liquor store). Advertises itself as "nouvelle Mexican" but it's really just good Mexican food. Moderately priced (the two of us got out for about $25 with no alcohol), pretty good food. * Chameleon Cafe (and Lizard Lounge), 1301 Orange Ave., Coronado, CA 92118. Phone 619-437-6677. Call for directions before you leave; the cafe is located on a side street; the address shown above (which is from their business card) will not get you there (although it will get you close). Features fusion cuisine. Try the chipotle smashed potatoes or the teriyaki mushroom salsa. I loved the New Mexico Chili Gnocchi (which resembles true chili only in that neither contains any beans). Expensive. Dinner for two (with more dessert than we should have eaten but no alcohol) ran us $90 or so. * Crab Catcher in La Jolla. Again, not strictly a chile-head place, but the "fire shrimp" appetizer will satisfy the need for heat. Spectacular view, ran about $35 for lunch. HTH. - Tony
