Greetings and salutations!
I am back from South Korea, and very glad to be home again.
One can only take so many showers in root-beer colored water
before the desire for a (nearly) all-over sand-blasting takes hold.
I did get a chance to sample a few hot items during my stay:
Yuk-ke-jang, a spicy vegetable beef soup at the KATUSA snack
bar. This had good flavor, moderate heat, light on the beef but
heavy on the noodles and vegetables. Very good, except for the
veggie that looked like a dirty sock (no I didn't taste it).
Battered stuffed and fried green pepper, about as hot as a jalapeno,
with a brownish yellowish goo-like stuffing. Not all that hot but the
flavor was interesting and actually pretty good. This was availbale at
most of the street-side stands in the market district as well as the
area known locally as "Down-Range". For anyone in the KC Metro
area, think: A cross between Westport and Independence Avenue,
gone horribly wrong.
The kimchee was very good and had good heat regardless of where
I ate. The market district had heaping baskets of fresh and semi-
dried chiles of several varieties. If some of the seeds of the ones
that were translucent red ( similar to the guajillo on pg 146 of
Peppers of the World (DeWitt/Bosland)) happened to fall into my
suitcase and then eventually happened to fall into my seed flats
next spring, why, a happy coincidence might be enjoyed next
harvest.
