I have grown datils here in Bloomington, Indiana for many years, no problems. The power of marketing: our local food editor bought into the hype that they can and are only grown in St. Augustine and published an article saying just that. I was happy to deliver some Hoosier grown Datils to her. They are also one of my most popular bedding plants. No matter how many flats I sow in the greenhouse, I always seem to sell out of them early on. Obviously, they are growing well in other states too. I may have a new datil. I've been working on a red one that came up in a customer's garden a few years ago and it is breeding fairly true. I hope to have that available in a year or so. It is very yummy.
