Margaret, no, I don't have a root cellar. My attic can go below 32*, and my garage probably gets down to 40*, while my basement stays warm. (It was designed that way.) The garage is subject to wild-life invasion, so the food wouldn't be too safe out there. My only solution is to buy less onions and potatoes. When I was growing up, we kept oranges, onions and spuds in a triple white veggie bin in the kitchen closet. Haven't seen one in years! My kitchen's too warm for them, anyway.
