I have questions for friends of mine who are considering putting in a zoysia lawn here in our zone 4b. Will zoysia be hard enough here, the companies claim it is hardy to -40. Does it really live up to the claims in the brochures? Will it grow in the hardpacked ashy clay that we have here? I mean the clay where they want to put this lawn is so hard packed that a regular large backhoe can't budge it. When they cut the pad for their house they had to bring in a humongous trackhoe to do the job. There is no organic matter in the clay at all. They've thrown a few bales of straw over the area during the last few years so there is a scant layer of organic matter on top but that's it.
