I talked to one of the scientists in the Extension plant diagnostic lab and
he told me that when trees are fertilized in a ring that coincides with
their feeder roots, which is generally the recommendation for fertilizing
trees, the grass will often decline within a year or so as a reaction to
the heavy application of fertilizer. Its the only situation where he has
seen a ring appear like the one I described. Due to the stress on the
grass, fungal diseases will often show up as well in that ring. I am taking
a sample of grass in this week for diagnosis and recommended treatment.
