You are better to use an acid wash that is permanent otherwise the paint will 
chip and look awful in even one season.  Acid wash changes the look and feel 
and color but isn't toxic as I recall.

 If I remember correctly you are located in LA. try Bramante/Crescent City 
Sculpture in Kenner (800 864-9031).  Vincent Guidroz is one of God's gifted 
young artists.  I know they can advise you.  Vincent studied in Italy and his 
"David" is better than any reproduction I have ever seen.  Email addy:
