Penny,

You are throwing away your garden here.  Mulch/compost/dig trenches(have
teenaged neighbour) dig trenches in your unplanted garden.  Throw in 6
inches of so of grass clipping, stamp down well, then put earth back. 
Soon you'll have wonderful fluffy soil on raised beds.

Mulching means very little weeding.
