[gardeners] community garden plot

Folks,
I have gotten a plot in the area community garden.
The plot is very overgrown so I have my work cut out
for me to clean it up. It looks like there is
asparagus growing in the plot as well as raspberries.
What can I do to preserve these plants? I don't want
to pull them up but can I cut them back?
