[gardeners] gophers????

Our garden is increasingly shaded due to neighbors tree so we are going
to grow some maters and squash at the Community Gardens.

I hear they have a horrific gopher problem.  Someone on another list
stated gophers don't bother tomatoes and squash.  I find that hard to
believe.  Any experience with thieving gophers and maters or squash????

I was told that gophers can't go below 18" or they die.  Hubby and son
rolled their eyes at the mention of placing hardware cloth around the
plot to that depth.

HELP!
