Hi, Penny, Technically all the things we call yams in this country are sweet potatoes; some are just darker, some lighter. The yam is a tropical tuber that will not grow in most of North America, odd as it may seem I grew up with that dichotomy in my home on Long Island, too, with the lighter variety being referred to as "sweet potatoes," FWIW Ron
