[gardeners] New patio around good trees

We have a 35 foot Bradford pear and a 25 foot Honey Locust seperated
by 18 feet.
Perfect distance for the hammock that now swings between them. <VBG>

What I would like to do is add a 30 foot diameter patio that
encompases both tree trunks. I plan on using 6"x9" concrete pavers
for the patio and leaving a small area of pea gravel around each tree
trunk. The ground is level (within 2 inches) for the entire area.
I was hoping the spaces between the pavers would allow enough air
and water to reach the roots.

I don't know if I should use sand or crush and run as a base for
the pavers. Was guessing from reading about a 3" base would be ok.

Will tamping the base be a serious problem for the tree roots? Is it
possible to water/mist the base repeatedly to produce a similar
effect as running a tamper over the area?
Building up around the outside edge won't be a problem.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
