Ah, George -- I don't think being 16 is the best wish ... I would much prefer to be 38, when my family was complete and the future looked so secure -- or even 48, when I had so many things interesting me that I first established my eventual pattern of minimal sleep so I could get it all in -- or even 58, when the computer world opened up to me with a life changing roar. I can well remember being 16. Typically, I was a rebellious daughter who believed she could outsmart the world if she remained on the alert at all times. Last week I turned 79, and I have to admit that I am still rebellious, but I now know that I can't get away with it. Jimmie and I approach our 60th wedding anniversary, and I realize that the ties that bind are stronger than the impulses towards self fulfillment. So George, I do believe that your granddaughter is correct in asking for the car -- she has to stand up and sing her own song in this world. Nobody says she ought to get it, of course.
