I just recently bought MailWasher, $19.95, and love it.
Works a lot like your Alan and bounces the spam back to the sender and also blacklists them. I can check or read email while it is still on the server and then dump it. Blacklisting keeps them from showing up on my puter again.

Have you guys considered Spam Eater Pro? It deletes the mail off the server
before you download your email. It compares known spammer email addresses
in it's database with your email, and deletes all that crap. I've been using
it for 3 years now, I swear by it. The new beta version is going to be even
