Here in a very dry climate, when one sprays water on the mildew during the heat of the day, the sun causes the water and spores to dry up in very short order, this halting the spread of this noxious pest.
 
Such a treatment is recommended by the IPM people at UC Berkely, and it seems to work fairly well for our roses here...when I am around during the day to spray!
