I chatted with a guy on the CH list, He has made the only
suggestion about using plastic in the garden that really made some
sense to me. He said he laid black plastic down about 3 weeks
before his plant out. This, in his garden killed most of the weed seeds
and warmed to soil up. Then he removed it before planting.
Personally I like this idea and will try it this year.
For wind protection, for the first few weeks after transplanting,
I use 3lb coffee cans with the bottoms cut out, and placed around
the plants
