I'm not so sure about their object being 'to get water' as you suggest.
My tomatoes grow a scant 60 feet from a stream, and still they get
nipped by squirrels ... even biting through my plastic netting on
occasion to get at them. Getting at water first hand would be easier.
	Beats me why they do it.           Ed
