I have a possible ID for your pods, but would have to have flower
arrangement, morphology, etc. to be certain.  ID:
   Capsicum Baccatum  
   Cultivar: "Peri-Peri"
   Home of Land Race: Portugal
   Common name:  peri-peri,  Orchid Pepper
   Seed source: Seed Savers Exchange

Note:  I have tried a similar pod and found it very flavorful, although
not extremely hot.  It sounds like your pods may have been picked green
and ripened in a shipping crate.  There is no substitute for vine
ripening in my book.  Hope this helps.
