They look something like a Jalapeno but are usually a little shorter and taper to more of a point than Jalaps. I've never seen red Jalapenos in a market. Here's the details from Mark Miller's "The Great Chile Book": "FRESNO (red) Also known as a Chile Caribe or Chile Cera. Tapers to a rounded end and measures about 2 inches long and between 1 and 1 1/4 inches in diameter. A wax type chile, thick fleshed, sweet and hot. Usually only available in the fall (not true here). It is sometimes mistaken for a red Jalapeno, although the two are different varieties and the Fresno is broader at the shoulders, as well as hotter. Excellent in salsas, ceviches, stuffings, bread, pickled (en escabeche). They can also be roasted and blended into sauces." No mention of smoking, but since you smoked it, it's a chipotle now .
