Brothers and sisters- The Colorado chile crop is in full swing. Prices are around 1 buck/pound, but should fall some a little later in the season. Bushel prices are around $15.00, which are significantly better than the per pound price. Roasting is another $2-3. Varieties around here include Pueblo (New Mexico type), mirasol, jalapeno, fresno, hot anaheim, regular anaheim, poblano, ancho, hot bells, a New Mexico type "super hot", bolitas (hot cherry peppers) and regular cherry peppers. Also, a couple of daring growers are trying habs, but very small plots, not really a commercial venture. The roasters are roaring, the smell of roasted chile is in the air, life is good. Went out and bought a few pounds of chile today while scouting for this post (who could resist...) and made a big batch of salsa cruda or pico de gallo or whatever you call it on your patch of the planet. Had a special zing that only really fresh ingredients (as in a couple of hours ago they were still on the plant) can give. If I could just get some fresh limes... Also made a batch of peach/hab salsa that is very good. May El Grande protect the fecund chile fields from the hail storms of August... The gabacho chile picker <<<boz>>>
