It's certainly true that all chiles originated in the Americas. I don't know if the Portuguese or other Europeans brought them to Africa. I stand corrected on tomatillos. It would have been more accurate to have said that tomatillos are most often roasted, peeled, crushed and used in salsa; they are rarely eaten raw, but it happens.
