I really don't know how well it works, since I've never done any experiments (some plants with, some plants without) where I could see a difference. My chile pepper transplants go directly from a 1000W HID light in the basement to the pepper patch outside with no hardening off period. They sometimes get a little sun or wind burn, but they always recover as the seedlings grow.
