I usually stay out the GMO debates since my opinion has been well documented but one of my students gave an excellent example of irony the other day. The ag industry is having a problem with Starlink volunteer plants coming up in corn fields. Farmers have been asked to either switch over to soybeans (on the theory that they will somehow then be able to go inand yank out the offending Starlink) or use a special herbicide that will kill off only the Starlink plants and not the rest of the corn field. So the farmers planted a crop that was bioengineered to not need a chemical but now will need to buy another chemical to erdicate that very crop.
