I have several dozen fruit laden plants in my garden that will disprove
that.

Many, perhaps, but not all.  I do keep a few in pots overwinter, and one
plant fruited before the other even flowered.  And I'm pretty sure there
isn't anyone else growing Rocotos for hundreds of miles.
