[gardeners] Virburnium blight or something?

A question. Back in mid-July, my viburnium was afflicted with something. It
isn't lack of water, that's for sure. I don't think it's too much water. I
think it's a disease - or insect - or something. All the old growth wilted
and gradually turned to a very dead orangish-brown. The only thing alive on
the bush is new growth from the roots - which is green and healthy.
Interestingly enough, a Japanese flowering crabapple that is in close
proximity to the virburnium (sp?) is afflicted with the SAME thing. It is
now dead. All of it (it was small). Any ideas out there? Some sort of
blight or disease?
