Linda, thanks for the warning! We had new furnace installed
just a month ago, but it utilized the old vents and chimney.
However, the only reason we got a new one was because
the pilot light kept going out, and Con Edison finally
disconnected all gas to the furnace, and told me to get the
"plenum" repaired (which was full of holes). Probably exhaust
fumes had been entering the basement for quite some time.

The local repair people refused to replace the "plenum", saying
that it was an integral part of the furnace and this would void the
Underwriters' certificate, so we opted for a complete new furnace,
after 19 years.

I will take the suggestion anyway and see about getting a
CM Alert.
