Carolyn, I started my alpines from seedlings, about 10 years ago. 
Given a bit of watering and a touch of fertilizer, they have been
indestructible. I even get an occasional volunteer popping up 
elsewhere in the veggie garden....  BTW, they have had full sun. 

Seedlings give you the advantage of fruit coming much sooner.
