<< >Do you or anyone else know the name and a source for a beautiful brown >rose? We saw it at the SF Garden Show 2 or 3 years ago. It is really >brownish rust and cream under the leaf. He never enjoyed gardening for many years, now the past >few years he is really into his roses and orchids. All quotes from the experts: Leonidas, if a florist rose? Michael of Michael's Roses said that his whole September 99 crop of Leonidas failed in the fields; it may not be a California rose at all....Petrose gave it the lowest ranking ever in his Pasadena garden. But when it is right ------it is perfect! JD (Calif) ........................... Best guess would be Leonidas a florist rose. We have it and out doors don't get the same brown the green houses get. It is a mildew magnet as well. I sure don't recommend it Bill (Calif) ........................... Hi, Penny: I say Leonidas too. Bill ------it doesn't grow t;he same everywhere, and may not mildew as often or much elsewhere. Depends on where t;hese people are. Greenhouse roses are under controlled atmosphere, and maybe in a cooler climate than yours, Leonidas will do better. Just tell that person to look out for mildew. It's so gorgeous maybe that person is willling to fight the mildew. Elizabeth (Illinois) .......................... Leonidas???? Everyone I've talked to out here said it was a rusty orange, rather than that delicious tan -- so it just may not do well in California gardens. I'd give it a try, but if it's got a tendency to mildew, it's not for us. :-( Jeri (Calif) ........................... A number of people have suggested Leonidas, but that's a Greek name, not French. I'm thinking it may be 'Cafe Ole?' Not quite French either, but it does exhibit those colors. At least mine did until it reverted back to Winter Magic.
