It looks as if "pone" comes from an Algonquian (Virginia) word;
it is also akin to a Delaware word  "apan" which means baked.

During WW II, we lived with a farm couple and their two very young
sons in a G.I.house on the post at Ft. Leonard Wood, Mo. They were
actually allowing their farm to lie idle for 2 or 3 years because they 
could earn far more money working for Uncle Sam on the Post....
And every single night of the year they had the same dinner, 
including the baby:  corn bread, a whole raw onion, and a big bowl of
milk.
