Belize is road miles! I've flown in twice and driven in several times. Once pulling a stock trailer loaded with bulls and once pulling a 25' boat. I admit those were two hairy trips! Once I drove down from Houston during a hurricane, (don't spend the night in a thatch hut during a hurricane, those coconuts turn into cannonballs <G>) Don't use Pemex gas in Mexico any more than you can help it. (carry your own gas to mix with it and be prepared to change out plugs midtrek). Other don'ts: Don't get locked in a truckstop toilet when you can't speak Spanish !! In Bze, we usually stay in Orange Walk (Northern section) but I've traveled all over, friends in Dangriga (Stann Creek), and Placencia is beautiful. But, Belize is a young person's place, not a retirement place. Too much theft (they don't think of it as a crime), too far from good medical facilities, and just too HARD living in general. But hey, I have friends in Costa Rica and they say it's a lot different there. Oh, to keep this garden related, I started bringing back habanero seed from Belize in 1972, back before it was 'fad food'.
