Janni,  one of my daughters must have spent 20 years munching
on Tums. She was ALWAYS in discomfort. 

Last year her doctor put her on prescription Prevacid 30mg, and
now she is totally symptom free!  There is no longer anything which 
she cannot eat -- so long as she takes one Prevacid a day. She can even 
bend over in the garden without the reflux, and that's an added 
blessing.
