We get 150 hours or less each winter at or below 45F. This is lower than most fruit bearing plants will need for a chilling factor but it doesn't hinder the elderberries. I grow fruit trees that are designed to be grow in my zone and they do pretty good. Elderberries are along every fence row in Louisiana and Texas that doesn't get mowed or sprayed regularly. Evidently birds spread the seed with no difficulty. Not sure about your climate though, IIRC it gets pretty hot there.
