I think the main reason one does not see macs in cookies much after Christmas, is that macadamia production hits a high point in the late fall, because the variety most favored by commercial growers (Cate) is in high gear during the latter part of the year...at least that is the case in SoCal. The variety we grow, Beaumont, is not the growers' favorite because it produces nuts and flowers all year long, more or less, which would make for difficult harvesting on a commercial basis, with no real "season" for picking. This year, barring disaster, we should have a nice "beginners' crop" of macs This week we did experience a disaster of sorts with our Bearss/Persian lime tree: one of the branches broke under the weight of the limes, which are much larger and a couple of months earlier this year, for some odd reason (maybe because our weather has been so unrelentingly HOT. I don't believe that citrus trees are pruned on any sort of regular basis in home gardens, and we were very surprised to see the breakage. My personal suspicion is that one of those $%^&*( feral cats climbed onto that heavily laden branch in an attempt to climb onto the garden wall on one of its forays. I know it will probably arouse the ire of the cat lovers on this list, but we are about ready to shoot them (not literally!): for they have turned our back yard into their own personal "cat box," leaving "surprises" for us when we go out to pick our veggies...or even go out just to hang clothes or do routine gardening. We are at about wit's end with them! On a happier note, we are really happy to hear of Jim's continuing progress. Yes, it is a long road back to something approaching normalcy, but we tend not to heal that quickly when we are not 19.....as I am becoming increasingly and painfully aware Do tell him that we think of him often, and continue to keep both of you in our prayers.
