We're having a bad time of it here -- my hubby Jim fell down the
whole cellar stairs last Monday night, landing on a 12-pack of
ginger ale he had been carrying up. He was terribly overtired from
rototilling "concrete" ground, had worked until 7:00pm instead of
quiting, and it caught up with him. He was unconscious for about
5 minutes, but when he came to, he insisted upon walking back up
those stairs and getting into bed. Nothing seemed to be broken, but
BOY! did he hurt. And he had fallen on his new case of posion ivy,
just to complicate things!

I kept a vigil at his bedside for 5-1.2 hours, making sure he was
not back in a coma, and then I allowed him a pain killer. There
never was a question about getting an ambulance, for Jim just will
not go to a hospital except for appendicitis ..... When morning broke,
he turned to me and said, "Uh, with your assistance, I think I can
mow the lawn to day." That's the spirit which drives a 76-year-old
man to over-do it ....

On the 5th day he was in such pain that we got him to my orthopedic
surgeon where we found out that he had torn the ligaments in his
shoulder. The treatment will be not to lift anything (or mow, either)
for 8 to 12 weeks, and a codeine at bedtime.

He's in pain the whole day, and yet he told me this morning that he
thought he could dig the holes for my hundreds of annuals with his
left hand -- I told him that nobody could step into that big bed until
it stops raining, but with our forecast of 7 more days of thunder-
storms, I think I'll lay some plywood down so I can reach the middle,
in the lulls between storms.
