Ifyou put D-Con out, do not take your dog into the basement and don't let
the dog get near it in any way.  It smells goods to dogs, and they'll eat
it.  I think you have a vole (large mouse-like critter, moves slower, has a
short tail to distinguish it from rats).  We buy expensive black
rectangular traps with a hole in one end.  Works like the olde time snap
mouse traps, but our dog can't get his foot inside and be harmed.  We do
have D-Con out in the basement, but that's now off-limits to the pooch.
