[gardeners] Gardening 101 question

Folks,
This is my first year gardening with vegetables and I
have a basic question and I'm a little embarrassed to
ask it. My seed packages for lettuce, beets, etc say
to sow every 2-3 weeks for continuous plants - where
do I sow these subsequent seeds? In separate rows -
or in between the plants that come up?
