Thanks, Terry, but they seem to be definitely biennial rather than 
perennials.  I do know kniphofia, and it's not that.  I think the Ipomopsis 
ID is correct, but which one of those is the problem. I haven't seen the 
plant in bloom, adding to the problem. I've sent Jaime's and Julie's IDs 
and URLs to my friend who has seen them in bloom. Best regards, Margaret
