It is a regional delicacy, isn't it? I thought I remembered you were from New England somewhere, they make them there too? Or, perhaps, your "real Italian sub" is not the same as mine. I ordered one in Virginia once -- sort of a hot ham and cheese on a roll. Not what I had in mind at all! We have bought ingredients and made them ourselves sometimes. They come out pretty close, though it seems they are never quite as good as those from Capriotti's or Casapulla's.
